Pendleton FFA Featured Story in SC Wildlife Magazine
That's right, Environmental and Natural Resources students in Mr. Blake Berry's class were featured in the September/October issue of theSouth Carolina Wildlife Magazine with a full two page spread. The magazine features the story of the Pendleton FFA Coastal Ecology Expedition, a life-changing field experience in its 5th year that immerses students in the wilderness of Georgetown County on lands managed by the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources. With the guidance and support of Mr. Jim Lee of the SCDNR, the students are put through a rigorous study-tour of some of South Carolina's most fragile ecosystems, including barrier islands, long-leaf pine forests, Carolina bays, coastal rivers and saltwater marshes. The experiences align with the classroom curriculum provided in the Pendleton agricultural education program. Mr. Berry also requires participants of the study tour to keep a detailed and accurate journal documenting places they went, people they met, concepts they learned for the day and personal reflection. Students absolutely love keeping a record of their expedition and this year it really paid of when the South Carolina Wildlife Magazine decided to offer a full length photojournalist story in their Trip Report section of their latest magazine to include the actual journal entries of Pendleton students accompanied by photographs taken by Mr. Berry. An even larger selection of photographs along with the selected journal entries from the trip are featured on the South Carolina Wildlife Magazine website: http://www.scwildlife.com/tripreport/index.html
The Pendleton FFA Coastal Ecology Expedition continues to be a quality, educational-based experience that encourages students to pursue careers in science, ecology, ecology and education while instilling in them an appreciation for the conservation of our natural heritage.
